The Chieftain Main Battle Tank Mk 2/3 is predominantely complete but still requires cosmetic restoration. It's main and G U (Generating Unit) engines both run and all electrical systems are operational. We have started restoration of this vehicle, which we know to be an SP (Special Projects vehicle).

ARMAMENT
The Chieftain Main Battle Tank Mk 2/3 is fitted with Ordnance 120mm L11 gun firing HE (high explosive) and APDS (armoured piercing discarding sabot). On the exterior of the cupola is a 7.62mm GPMG General Purpose machine gun and is used by the commander for defence against ground troops and low flying aircraft. The gunner also has a .50in browning mounted alongside the main gun for ranging. You will see smoke dischargers on both sides of the turret, which would provide a readily available smoke screen which can be used to allow the vehicle to manoeuvre under cover.

ENGINE
The Chieftain Main Battle Tank Mk 2/3 is fitted with the Leyland L60 MK4A. 6 Vertical cylinders, opposed pistons 2 stroke Diesel, 19 litre water cooled engine, producing 650bhp at 2100rpm giving the vehicle a top speed of 25.3mph. The vehicle is also fitted with a H30 No.4 Mk7A 3 Vertical cylinders opposed pistons, 2 stroke Diesel producing 27bhp to drive a 200 amp generator for charging the batteries and a single phase 6 amp 200V alternator for the turret.
