Armoured campaigners raise bonanza for Help for Heroes
Two armoured cars from a South Norfolk military vehicle collection helped raise £868 when they joined a charity campaign in support of Help for Heroes in Long Stratton on Saturday (December 5).
The 12-hour fund-raising marathon, organised by the founder of the Turrets and Tracks Norfolk Tank Museum in Forncett St Peter, Stephen MacHaye, and his fellow volunteers, featured a Saladin armoured car, posted outside the kebab shop and next to the fish & chip shop in The Street, on the A140, while a Fox armoured car was stationed at the car park entrance to the Co-operative store nearby.
Saturday’s collections have pushed the total the non-profit making organisation has raised for Help for Heroes at public appearances around the region during the year to over £2,400 - and donations are still being counted from other local collection points set up ahead of the event.
Stephen said: “This is an amazing total, far exceeding what we had hoped for. We are all extremely grateful to people in Long Stratton for their outstanding generosity. We were still collecting money right up to the end of the day, with over £100 donated in the final hour.
“Thanks to the event being publicised in the EDP, one person came all the way from Fundenhall just to make a donation.”
Turrets and Tracks is a collection of military vehicles and equipment predominantly from the last one hundred years, ranging from heavyweight main battle tanks such as the Chieftain and Centurion, to uniforms, small arms and artefacts. It was founded by Stephen MacHaye in 2004, fourteen years after he started his collection.
